Who Governed Karlobag?

The story of Karlobag’s municipal administration reaches back to the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, when the following was adopted in 1757: the Statute of the Town of Karlobag , a fundamental document regulating municipal government, the administration of justice and everyday life in Karlobag. The military almanacs and schematism records of the Habsburg Monarchy subsequently offer a rare glimpse into the town’s administrative structure and daily functioning. Behind the official titles were real people: town judges, magistrate councillors, commanders, port and public-health officials, physicians, teachers and many others who shaped the life of the town over the course of decades.
